About Me – A Granddaughter’s Tribute to the Hot Water Cornbread Queen
Hot water cornbread isn’t just a dish—it’s a cherished piece of our family’s story, rooted deep in Native American and African traditions and seasoned with Southern love. The journey begins with Native Americans, who first grew corn and ground it into meal, creating simple breads that nourished generations. When my ancestors arrived in the South, they brought with them resilience and creativity, turning cornmeal, salt, and boiling water into something truly special. Hot water cornbread became a staple in African American homes, especially in the South, where it was always served hot, fresh, and full of heart.
But in my eyes, the real Hot Water Cornbread Queen was my grandmother (Affectionally known by most as "Aunt Fannie"). She would send for me to come help her cook Sunday dinner on Saturday nights. I grew up by her side in the kitchen, watching her work her magic every Saturday night as she prepared Sunday dinner. No matter what else was on the menu, you could count on her hot water cornbread—never made early, always fried up last so it hit the table piping hot, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I can’t remember a single Sunday dinner at her house without it.
As I got older, I carried on her tradition, making hot water cornbread for my own family. But I decided to add my own twist—mixing in new flavors that my loved ones couldn’t get enough of. And let me tell you, I’ve learned that not everybody can make hot water cornbread, no matter how hard they try! That’s what inspired me to share my family’s legacy and help others bring a little piece of our tradition to their own tables.
This business is my way of honoring my grandmother—the true Hot Water Cornbread Queen—and the generations of Native and African American cooks who turned simple ingredients into something extraordinary. Every mix I make is filled with love, heritage, and a deep respect for the women who came before me.
So come on in, grab a seat at our table, and enjoy a taste of Southern tradition, passed down with pride from my grandmother’s hands to yours.
